On August 23, 1812, at critical moments for the nascent Motherland, when the forces realistic,
victorious in Huaqui, crossing borders and were advancing towards Buenos Aires
(also under threat from Montevideo, in Spanish hands), Buenos Aires for the first time saw the blue and white flag created by Belgrano. The event took place in the tower of the Church of St. Nicholas of Bari, located on the site where the obelisk is now.
The old church was demolished in the 30s (in connection with the widening of Corrientes Avenue)
and moved to Ave. Santa Fe 1334.
The Board of Historic Studies of St. Nicholas, founded in 1986, held every year (August 23 each) with the various events raising of the flag in today's Republic Square.
The Buenos Aires neighborhood, as passed by each of the city's inhabitants, is best known for "center" for the porteños "the Troc," but never tell anyone "the neighborhood of St. Nicholas"
It owes its name to the Church of St. Nicholas that was founded in 1773 under current streets Carlos Pellegrini and Corrientes where Izar for the first time in Buenos Aires Argentina's flag. At widened Corrientes Street this historic Church has disappeared.
-- AV. Leandro N. Alem: This street is a kind of very Spanish style roof that architecturally is called "recover" and gives a very beautiful and unique. On this Av. We see the sculpture "the postman."
-- Place de la Republique: as a square, within the meaning itself, does not exist, it is entertainment powerhouse Buenos Aires,
is the reference point where the tourists and residents, their existence is more imaginary than real,
only need to know the point of convergence of the Avenues on July 9, Diagonal Norte (Av. Roque Sáenz Peña) and Corrientes.
-- Street May 25: It was known until recently about 30 years ago "street of sin" because the bars were crowded by
sailors passing foreign ships and women of the night.
-- Av. Currents: New sidewalks (September 2005)
The Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure City was commissioned to carry out works to revitalize
Corrientes Avenue as a shopping mall, gourmet and cultural as well as preserve and enhance the area, 14,000 square metres increase in pedestrian areas.
